Pierce's "love" for nail polish, she said, was "very much there to help my mom polish," because her family loves it.
"One of my family was very fond of you working and learning, and very much a part of her being a beauty mom," Pierce said. "She's always been a very good person and very good mother."
Pierce's love for nail polish has been her success story for more than 50 years.
The makeup artist also graduated from Brooklyn College of the Arts with B.A. from Cornell and a master's degree from New York University in 2013, when she began working with her mother's salon, Nite Owl in the Bronx, said Courtney Meehan, a spokeswoman for Nite Owl salon, which operates the salon. The salon is owned and operated by Pierce's mother, Nanna Pierce.
Tomi Cushing was born in Brooklyn but moved to Los Angeles when she was 11. During her freshman year at Williams College to pursue her studies in applied science, Cushing's mother taught her to use one of her nails, according to Cushing's friend Michael Schaffer, who knew Cushing and worked with her at the salon
