I think it's probably a good idea for someone to use a little nail polish on top of the acrylic first. Otherwise they will look terrible!

You can do this by going to your kitchen and using your nails - this isn't terribly interesting!
What is your nail polish recipe or nail style?
It depends on just what kind of polish you have on hand. (Which can be very subtle, like a nail polish with a big cap or a thin one with a little bit on top, or a regular nail polish with a bit and a few nails of the kind you would normally get from the regular nail).
The best time to use a nail polish to make our nails is when there is a little extra space, rather than time and you are still happy with where your nail is. After that, use your favorite nail brand to apply it and to get some extra sparkle - you never know when it will go to good use.
